What the surface tells you
The first hour after the groundskeeper finishes is the most reliable read on how the surface will play. Look for grass coverage, cracks that are starting to open, roller tracks and any patch where the surface is visibly drier than the rest. These four signals together tell you whether to expect pace, bounce or turn in the first six overs.
A green-tinged surface usually holds pace for the first innings and slows in the second. A dry, cracked surface usually grips from ball one and rewards spinners earlier than the calendar suggests. A surface with consistent roller tracks and even grass plays closer to neutral, with the toss and batting order carrying more weight than the surface itself.
Square-boundary dimensions matter more in the powerplay than at the death. A short square boundary rewards batters who hit on the off side; a long square boundary rewards batters who work the leg side and rotate strike. Read the dimensions alongside the batting order, not in isolation.
Weather and dew
Dew is the most under-weighted variable in fantasy lineups. A heavy dew typically arrives in the second innings and rewards the chasing side: the ball comes onto the bat more cleanly, spinners lose grip, and run-scoring accelerates. If the weather forecast suggests heavy dew, the chase is favoured and your captaincy call should reflect that.
Wind direction matters at a few venues where the boundary geometry interacts with the prevailing breeze. Humid air holds more moisture than dry air, so the dew signal is usually stronger in humid conditions even when the temperature is similar.
Batting order and powerplay approach
The same batting order can produce two different powerplay profiles depending on the team's approach. An order that opens with a strike-rate-stabiliser and a boundary-hunter will produce a different run-rate distribution than an order that opens with two boundary-hunters. The role-first read matters more than the names.
We track each team's powerplay scoring rate weekly. A team that has averaged 8.4 runs per over in the powerplay across the last four matches is signalling intent; a team that has averaged 6.8 is signalling caution. The captaincy calculus depends on which signal is stronger.
Matchup reads
The single most underrated matchup is the new-ball bowler's handedness against the opener's preferred scoring area. A right-arm bowler who angles the ball across a left-handed opener can build dot-ball pressure that the opener usually breaks with a risky shot; the captaincy call in that matchup depends on the opener's tolerance for risk.
Spin matchups in the powerplay are rarer but more decisive when they happen. A team that brings spin on in the third over against an opener who struggles against turn is signalling intent; the field placement and the bowler's line will tell you whether the intent is real or theatre.
Captaincy for the powerplay
The powerplay captaincy choice depends on contest size. In a 50/50 contest, an opener with a stable role and a high floor is the safer call; the captaincy multiplier rewards the floor more than the ceiling. In a large-field GPP, an opener with a higher ceiling against the specific new-ball matchup is the better call; the captaincy multiplier rewards the ceiling even if it means accepting a lower floor.
After the toss
When the toss lands, three things change: the batting order, the bowling plan and the dew expectation. Re-check your captaincy call against the actual order. If the team that bowls first wins the toss, the new-ball bowlers carry the highest ceiling; if the team that bowls second wins, the chase advantage shifts the captaincy call toward a powerplay batter who can build an innings.
Confidence label: probable. The pitch read is reliable; the batting order read is not, until the toss. Verify both on the day.
