Why role matters more than form
Form is noisy. Role is durable. A bowler who has bowled the 18th, 19th and 20th over in each of the last six matches is signalling that the captain trusts them at the death, regardless of whether the last spell went for ten runs or forty. The captain's trust is the most reliable predictor of future allocation, because captains change allocation slowly and only when forced.
The same bowler can be a fantasy star or a liability depending on whether their allocation is stable or shrinking. A bowler whose overs are being quietly cut from three to two at the death is signalling that the captain is losing trust; a bowler whose allocation has been bumped from two to three is signalling the opposite.
Reading overs allocation
The single most important number for a death-overs bowler is the count of overs bowled in the 17 to 20 window across the season. We track this weekly. A bowler who has averaged 2.5 death overs per match is signalling a stable role; a bowler who has averaged 1.5 is signalling a shrinking role; a bowler who has averaged 3.5 is signalling an expanding role.
Use the allocation signal alongside the wicket-taking and dot-ball signals. A bowler with high dot-ball percentage but low allocation is a buy-low candidate: their expected points are higher than their actual points suggest. A bowler with low dot-ball percentage but high allocation is a sell-high candidate: their allocation is masking a softening role.

Yorkers, slower balls and the matchup edge
The death-overs matchup is shaped by the bowler's variation set and the batter's scoring area. A yorker bowler matches well against batters who hit straight; a slower-ball bowler matches well against batters who hit across the line. The matchup edge is not always visible in the bowler's season numbers, but it shows up in the head-to-head.
Captaincy of a death bowler
Captaining a death bowler is a high-ceiling, low-floor decision. The wicket bonus is large; the economy penalty is small but real. In a 50/50 contest, captain a batter; in a large-field GPP, captain a death bowler whose allocation is stable and whose matchup is favourable.
Selection risks
The biggest selection risk is allocation change. A bowler whose allocation is stable this week can lose it next week if the captain rotates the attack. We watch for the early signals: a death over bowled by a part-timer in a tight game, a death over bowled by an all-rounder instead of the usual specialist. The signal is rarely loud, but it is real.
